Most pools in Morningside and the greater Sandton area were built in the 80s and 90s. Gallo Manor and Wynberg have a lot of older marbelite pools. A lot of people are suprised when their pool needs repairs. But honestly, it makes sense once you understand the conditions around here.
Joburg North sits at about 1,700 metres above sea level. The UV here is very intense — more intense than coastal cities. That UV breaks down pool plaster, pool tiles, and even the PVC fittings on your pump over time. Add in the wild temperature swings between June’s freezing mornings and January’s 35-degree afternoons, and you’re putting a pool under serious strain every single year.
Then there’s the Highveld storm season — October through March. Those storms are violent. We’re talking 30mm of rain in 20 minutes, lightning, sometimes hail. Every big storm season we get calls from Morningside and Gallo Manor about pumps that got fried by a power surge, pools full of debris that clogged the filters, and pools that went green overnight because the rain dumped so much organic matter into the water.
And then there’s borehole water. A huge number of properties in Sandton, Morningside and Rivonia use borehole water to fill their pools — especially after Day Zero scares and ongoing water restrictions. Joburg borehole water is hard water with high mineral content. It calcifies filters, corrodes metal fittings, and scales up pool surfaces much faster than municipal water. We see this problem constantly in this area.
That’s the question everyone asks when their pool breaks: ‘Who do I call in Morningside? Who can I actually trust?’ We get it. There’s a lot of guys advertising pool services who aren’t really qualified, don’t have the right equipment, and disappear after they take your money.

Everyone wants to know the price upfront, and we think that’s fair. Here’s a rough guide to pool repair costs in the Sandton area. These are starting prices — the actual cost depends on your specific pool and problem:

Not always — but it might be. In Joburg’s dry winter (May to August), pools can lose 2–5cm of water per week just from evaporation. Thats normal. But if your pool is losing water during rainy season, or losing more than about 5cm per week in winter, you probably have a leak somewhere. The bucket test is a easy way to check. Fill a bucket with pool water, put it on the pool step, and mark both water levels. Check after 24 hours. If the pool has dropped more than the bucket, it’s leaking. Then call us.
Green water is usually a chemical imbalance — low chlorine, high pH, algae growth. But if chemicals keep failing even when you’re adding them correctly, the problem is often the filtration system. A filter that isn’t running long enough, or a pump that’s not circulating the water properly, means the chemicals never do their job. In Morningside and Sandton we also see a lot of green pools caused by borehole water — the high mineral content fights with chlorine and makes it much less effective. We can test your water and your system and tell you exactly what’s going on.
This is usually one of a few things. The pump might be air-locked — air has got into the system and it can’t prime. Sometimes just loosening the lid and letting air out fixes it. But it can also be a failed capacitor in the motor, a seized impeller, or a motor that’s starting to fail. Don’t just leave it — a pump running dry can burn out quickly and then you’re looking at a full motor replacement instead of a cheaper capacitor fix. The estates and cluster developments along Rivonia Road and around Sunninghill tend to have newer equipment but more complex systems — automated chemical dosing, variable speed pumps, heat pumps. We work on these regularly.
